Combating Fake Reviews in the U.S.
Fake customer reviews pose a significant threat to market integrity, consumer trust, and fair competition. This panel will examine how the United States addresses this issue through regulatory frameworks, enforcement measures, and emerging strategies. Participants will gain valuable insights into the challenges associated with detecting and mitigating fraudulent reviews and the ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and fairness in the digital marketplace.
SPEAKERS
Richard Kelly joined the BBB in 2011 as a Senior Regulatory Affairs Advisor, following a thirty-six-year legal career at the FTC. As a staffer and manager at the Commission, Dick led or supervised numerous investigations into the legality of a company’s marketing and advertising practices, spending the last ten years in the FTC’s Division of Advertising Practices. At the BBB, he devotes much of his time helping BBBs make sense of the myriads of actions filed by government agencies and entities at the state and federal level and, with an incredible BBB team of ad review experts, helped draft significant revisions to the BBB’s Code of Advertising.
Barbara Johnson is an IP Attorney licensed in both Brazil and the US, having worked in several large Brazilian IP offices. With an LL.M. from George Washington University, DC, and after working at the IP protection areas of Facebook Reality Labs and Corsearch, she is currently the Associate General Counsel for IP at the International Association of Better Business Bureaus.

Felipe Barros Oquendo Felipe Barros Oquendo is an attorney-at-law in Rio de Janeiro. Felipe’s practice focuses on litigation and consultation related to Intellectual Property and Unfair Competition. Felipe has acted in several IP cases before the Brazilian Courts and has expertise in cross-border issues. In 2021, Felipe was elected one of the Vice-Presidents of the LIDC and to the council of the Brazilian Industrial Property Association ABPI.
